A manifestação teve a adesão de milhares de pessoas e houve uma greve geral. Houve confrontos com a polícia, pessoas morreram e outras ficaram feridas.

E, em 1889, a Segunda Internacional Socialista, que reunia várias organizações de trabalhadores, decidiu em Paris, convocar todos os anos uma manifestação pela implantação das oito horas. A data escolhida foi o 1º de Maio, em homenagem aos trabalhadores de Chicago.

Em 1891, durante uma manifestação, 10 operários foram mortos no Norte da França. Vinte e oito anos depois, a França passa a adotar as oito horas de jornada de trabalho e anuncia o 1º de maio como o Dia do Trabalho.
